An alternate gravel road route is available for those who wish to cycle between Ōpua and Kawakawa. This alternate route is known as the Ōpua Whangae Road Trail. Not for the faint of heart this road trail is 17.7km long and is recommended for adult cyclists with gravel cycling experience. 

Although not part of the Great Ride – this road trail offers beautiful views ridding through the Ōpua State Forest. Please note that there are no public toilets along the Ōpua Whangae Road Trail and cell reception patchy at best.:
