Road trail - Ōpua/Whangae

Cycle between Kawakawa to Ōpua via Oromahoe Road and Whangae Road through the Ōpua Forest

Why is there a road trail?

With the reinstatement of the Bay of Islands Vintage Railway line and the introduction of the train-trail connection, Pou Herenga Tai – Twin Coast Cycle Trail needed to find a solution that allowed us to offer cyclists an option to cycle coast to coast with the newly restricted access to the rail corridor.

An interim solution was to utilise two rural gravel roads – Oromahoe Road and Whangae Road that wind through Ōpua Forest. This route is called the Ōpua Whangae Road Trail.

Ōpua Whangae Road Trail

Distance: 17.7km

Grade: 3-4

An alternate gravel road trail is available for those who wish to cycle between Ōpua and Kawakawa. This alternate trail is known as the Ōpua/Whangae Road Trail. This road trail takes you from Kawakawa, along Whangae road, then right on to Oromahoe road. This road trail is 17.7km long and is recommended for adult cyclists with gravel cycling experience.

Although not part of the Great Ride – this road trail offers beautiful views ridding through the Ōpua State Forest. Please note that there are no public toilets along the Ōpua Whangae Road Trail and cell reception patchy at best.
