culture and cycling

Cycle an easy 5kms from Kawakawa township to the striking pou whenua designed by local artist Josie Kemp-Baker, the pou tells the story of Moerewa and its people

deliberate design

The large koru symbolises new beginnings and honours the ancestors who crossed the oceans and established their home in the area. Six circles embedded within the carving represent the past, present, and future generations, reflecting the ongoing growth and development of the community

small town strength

Installed in 2023, the pou whenua also commemorates the completion of major stormwater improvements that have helped protect Moerewa from flooding. Today, it stands as both a cultural marker and a symbol of resilience, making this short ride a meaningful opportunity to connect with the stories, history, and identity of one of Northland's most important communities
